Starting on July 1, West Virginia University will allow permit holders to carry concealed handguns in certain areas of its campuses.
This decision comes after the state legislature passed the "Campus Self-Defense Act" last year, giving state institutions until this summer to implement policies. The university's Board of Governors recently approved the finalized rules, which include exemptions for certain areas on campus.
WVU plans to invest around $1 million in mobile metal detectors and secure gun lockers in some buildings. Those carrying firearms on campus will need to be aware of the exemptions and store their guns in their cars when necessary. Additionally, university employees in single-occupancy offices will have the ability to prohibit guns.
The university is also working on creating signage and syllabus statements to clarify where weapons can and cannot be carried on campus.
