History keeps a record by which we can recall the happenings of the past. The experiment of democracy known as the United States of America has a dominant and exemplary place forever etched in the annals of world history.
However, it seems to be the popular trend, even among our own citizens, to criticize America and its lack of compassion and seeming disinterest in the distress of other nations around the world.
Any sincere student of history finds this to be untrue. Instead, the student develops deeper pride in the country’s interest and assistance throughout the world as a nation dedicated to peace at home as well as internationally where at all possible.
Though some would try and rob it of this glorious history, America has always stood as a beacon and example of hope beyond our own democracy as protectors of freedom globally.
How many times have young men and women of America’s armed forces, in addition to protecting our homeland, gone abroad to assist other nations in their battles for freedom?
In our instruction of American history, we should stress not only the privilege and blessing of being Americans, but also our rich heritage which includes a responsibility to continue bringing hope to all. Those who observe and study history have the duty of portraying the foundational tenets of our past.
There should always be special respect for all armed services veterans who have served with pride as they march through our glorious national history into the present group who are now dutifully serving.
America is much like a family whose children fight and argue until an outsider in some manner offends or attacks one of its members. Instantly they forget their arguments, at least for a while, and attack and defend as one with family purpose and allegiance.
Today it is easy to access a myriad of warped thinking which can readily pollute and even destroy the true evidence of our American history, especially for our youth.
We have our faults as all nations do. But never in history has any nation done more for so many others beyond its own citizens. We should take some time to be proud and make sure our children are aware of their blessing of being Americans.
We are not responsible for America’s heritage, but we are responsible for its future. May God continue to bless America, our home sweet home.
